BIU Dental Program Guideline

INTRODUCTION

Intelligent, articulate, ethical and self motivated individuals with a will to upgrade their professional skills are encouraged to pursue this Postgraduate program.

AIM

Aim of the program is to train specialist, academician who will be conversant with recent advances and techniques in the concerned specialty and to develop skills in carrying out clinical research, writing research report and work as a trainer in the concerned subject.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

 BDS or equivalent degree in Modern Medicine from a recognized university.

•  Should be registered with the respective Dental Council/ Licensing body

•  Commitment to participate in, and complete, any training program of the University as directed by the appropriate Academic committee during the training program.

•  The desired attributes of a doctor to the PG program are:

ATTRIBUTES:

•  To have a sound academic record, acceptable training (as defined) in  the medical and surgical sub-specialties and psychiatry, and involvement, a history of involvement or a willingness to be involved in research projects.

•  To demonstrate sound clinical ability and judgment in a wide range of clinical settings.

•  To show a willingness to work hard and an ability to learn, assimilate, assess and evaluate knowledge in order to apply this to the care of patients with.

•  To demonstrate evidence of physical and mental capability to fulfil and complete all aspects of the learning program, including the performance of the procedures and treatment modalities outlined in the curriculum.

•  To perform all the duties associated with a training position conscientiously; to take responsibility for patient management whilst always being aware of personal limitations; and to recognise when to seek help and guidance from more experienced colleagues.

•  To demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with empathy and understanding.

•  To demonstrate an ability to have good rapport with peers and other health professionals; and the ability to show respect for others' opinions.

•  To show initiative and responsibility in the performance of all duties and in personal study programs and an ability to carry out realistic self-assessment, in order to recognise personal levels of competence and ability to perform specific tasks.

•  To be punctual and readily available at all times during working hours and after hours, as required by roster.

•  To demonstrate a commitment to ongoing, self-directed learning and self-improvement.

•  To show continued support of and participation in the training of health care professionals, especially medical students, nurses and other trainees.

•  To show evidence of interests and activities in the broader community.

SELECTION PROCESS /CRITERIA

Based on merit / interview/ Entrance Examination.
The selection process will be open, transparent and accountable. Every applicant who fulfils the selection process/criteria will be given an opportunity to compete for the available seats.

APPLICATION: Application can be obtained from the PG Program coordination office or from the BIU website
Sufficient time will be allowed to enable all requirements of the application process to be completed and submitted.

SELECTION: The selection committee will utilize information from the following sources in order to select the required candidates:

•  The curriculum vitae

•  Referees reports

•  The interview

CURRICULUM VITAE: Specific requirements for the curriculum vitae are outlined in the application form. In general, these encompass academic record, research experience, publications, work experience.

REFEREES REPORTS: These will be standardized with the view to achieving:

•  Objectivity

•  Comparability

•  Quantification

Applicants must supply the names of two primary medical referees who will be contacted by the University to provide a verbal reference as part of the initial short-listing process. These referees may or may not be contacted. Candidates will be asked on the application form to give their permission to contact their referees in keeping with privacy legislation.

INTERVIEW: The Selection Committee will meet and consider all applications with reference to the candidates' curriculum vitae and reports, both written and verbal, from referees and other persons if applicable. The committee will decide which candidate is required to be interviewed. The interview will be conducted in a manner that is objective and free of bias.

All applications will be considered purely on merit.
Any matter covered in the candidates' curriculum vitae, referees' reports or reports from other persons (if applicable) is subject to review during the selection process. In general, the selection committee will aim to establish the candidates':
Academic abilities and cognitive skills
Qualities of self motivation, social responsibility and ethics
Clinical and practical skills
Patient communication and care skills
Communication skills with colleagues and ancillary staff
General communication skills

Future potential in the chosen field

DURATION OF THE COURSE  

•  FRESH GRADUATES – Three Years

•  CANDIDATES WITH EXPERIENCE –Two Years. Candidates with minimum of two years experience in the respective subject will be given one year exemption, however he/she has to sit for the first year University Examination at the end of the Second year.

•  DIPLOMA HOLDERS – Two Years – Candidates those who have already completed Diploma program in the concerned specialty will be exempted one year of study, however it is mandatory for them to write the thesis and appear for one clinical paper. Special consideration may be given to those who have experience in the same specialty.

 

ACADEMIC REGULATION

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PROGRAM

Students pursuing PG program under affiliated institutes of the university
EG:  UEIMS, DUBAI , UAE, Egypt

OVERSEAS STUDENTS PROGRAM

Students pursuing P.G program on their own from their respective place of residence under the approved Mentor & Hospital. However the chosen hospital / institution should have the required infrastructure as per the norms of the university.

Infrastructure Requirements of the Hospital: It should have at least 20 dental working chairs with other related investigative facilities and should have adequate training facilities for teaching and learning purposes.

 

DUTIES OF THE MENTORS

MENTORS are Fellows of the BIU. The primary role of the Clinical Supervisor is to teach and provide feedback to Students.
In general, the Mentors should:
Be familiar with the objectives, curriculum and procedures of the training program.
Regularly observe Students with patients, peers and other medical staff.
Provide constructive feedback to the Student on his/her performance in the clinical setting.
Discuss strategies to overcome any weaknesses in performance with the Student concerned.
Certifying clinical assessment report CAR Formative Assessment Report FAR periodically.

 

METHOD OF TRAINING

SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING: Self-directed learning is a process in which individuals take the initiative, with or without the help of others, to diagnose their learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify learning resources, select and implement learning strategies and evaluate learning outcomes. Students, as adult learners, are expected to take responsibility for continuing self-directed learning. Students are encouraged to seek information which fulfils their learning needs from all relevant sources including current and pertinent literature in their field of study. Students are also encouraged to attend grand rounds and relevant hospital conferences and meetings involving general aspects of medicine and surgery.

PERIODICAL ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION: At the beginning of every six months the students will be given the list of questions/Topics prepared by the concerned subject experts and the students should answer those questions and submit the answer copies (Assignment) to the PG Coordination Office within the stipulated date along with the Formative Assessment Report (FAR) . The submitted answer copies will be evaluated by the subject experts and marks will be assigned to it.  These marks will be carried over to the final university assessment.  This exercise will be done all throughout the 3 years study period.

CLINICAL PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE: Students will be provided with list of clinical practical topics to be learnt every year.  Students are expected to learn those topics through clinical practice and submit a report every six months in the given format duly signed by the mentor.

CLINICAL TRAINING RECORD BOOK (CTRB) (log book)
The Clinical Training Record Bookis designed to document student's acquisition of skills and monitor their progress through out training. It assists the Students and his/her Mentor to:
a) Monitor the acquisition of skills and
b) Identify those skill areas which require more exposure.
Clinical Training Record Booksmust be reviewed and signed by the Mentors annually. They must be satisfactorily completed and submitted with applications to sit for the FINAL Examinations. They will be reviewed by the Chief Examiner during the Examination

 

THE SYLLABUS


Part- I

Paper -I Applied basic sciences
Part –I Examination will be conducted at the end of the first year

Part II Thesis writing

Thesis subject will be chosen and approved by the end of the first year. Thesis should be submitted by the end of the second year and will be examined by the external examiner and internal examiners. The candidate will not be allowed to sit for the final examination without approval of the thesis

Part –III

Paper – II Clinical Subject
Paper –III Recent advances in the Specialty
Clinical case presentation
Practical [ OSCE] + Viva

 

EVALUATION

Formative Evaluation
This will be done through periodical internal assessment/ submission of the assignment papers to the university, which will carry 20% of the total marks and it will be finally added to the university examination marks. The assignment writing will be for all the three years of study.

Formative Assessment in the Basic Science / clinical program.
Formative Assessment: Formative assessment is designed to provide feedback to students to assist them to identify their learning needs so that they can be focused in their study. It is a purely a learning tool. It does not affect students' progression in the program or impact on their final results. The Formative assessment report is completed twice yearly (in March & September) by each student in conjunction with their Mentor . It is designed to provide a starting point for the student to consider his/her progress and future learning needs, and to stimulate discussion between the mentor and student. Both the student and the mentor should sign the relevant section of the Formative Assessment Report.

Summative Assessment , on the other hand, is a judgment about someone's performance at a particular point in time against defined criteria. Summative assessment can include a formative element. 


CLNICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE STUDENT
Students complete a range of summative assessments throughout their Clinical training. These include assessments of performance in the workplace, competence in essential procedures and treatment modalities, and written/ clinical examinations.

CLINICAL ASSESSMENT REPORT

Summative clinical assessment aims to assess whether students performance has met required standards, relative to level of training, during the preceding 6 months. It is designed to inform students about the quality of their performance in a range of areas and to apprise those students who are not meeting expected standards of program and the need for improvement. Students are required to perform satisfactorily in these assessments in order to progress through the clinical training program. The designated mentors should complete the Clinical Assessment Report CAR twice yearly (in March & September along with FAR).

Students are expected to maintain a CTRB/log book for all the clinical postings.
Prior to the clinical postings the student will be given a list of topics/skills to be learnt during the clinical postings and the same should reflect in their Clinical training Record Book (CTRB).

 

THE UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION

Theory, practical, OSPE, OSCE and Viva Voce pattern will be followed in the University examination. The examination will be conducted at the approved University Centers.

ELIGIBILITY TO SIT FOR THE  UNIVERSITY EXAMINATION

In order to be eligible to sit in the Examination students must:

•  Have satisfactorily completed all requirements of the Curriculum

•  Submit a completed Clinical Training Program Record Book CTRB.

•  Have submitted signed FAR & CAR

•  Have record of publications and presentations

•  Demonstrate satisfactory attendance requirement.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that all necessary documentation is submitted

PASS MARKS


To pass, a candidate is required to score a Minimum of 50% marks in theory and practical examination.

 

THE DEGREE

Candidates who successfully complete the course and pass the examination will be awarded Master degree by the British International University .
